INSPIRE - Mentoring Program
This program will provide one-on-one support and guidance for young people in making meaningful, law-abiding decisions about their future.  The aim of the program is to provide support which will help them change their behaviour and reduce the incidences of repeat offending, including anti-social or violent behaviour. The mentors will help the young people involved to make good decisions and will provide them with important life skills. You will complete a training program with us and then work with young people on a weekly basis for 12 months, Shire Wide Youth Services will provide support through training updates and ongoing supervision.

Please contact Kiora Park Youth Centre on 9525 7919 for more information

Application Form

There are a number of other ways volunteers and students can be involved in Shire Wide Youth Services.

Volunteers

The Board of Shire Wide is made up of 7 directors and oversees the strategic activities of Shire Wide with a focus on governance, long-term goals and accountability. The Executive Officer manages the day-to-day operations. Download the Board of Management Brochure for more information.

The Board is all volunteers. They are members of the organisation and are elected to the board each year at our Annual General Meeting. If there is a vacancy, the board may approach specific individuals who have particular skills that have been identified as being useful to the organisation eg an accountant, a marketer etc

  1. Any financial member of the organisation is eligible to nominate for the Board at the Annual General Meeting.
  2. Other volunteers may approach a project Manager or the Executive Officer directly to express their interest in volunteering. Depending on their area of interest, volunteers will be asked to submit a resume or CV, and attend an interview with the Executive Officer and relevant project manager.

We use volunteers in a variety of ways throughout the organisation, if you are interested click here for more information

Students and work placements

Shire Wide is a forerunner in youth services provision and we recognise that student placements are a critical element in a student’s professional development. The use of theory, knowledge and an understanding of a range of practice methods is an essential part of effective youth work practice. Students offer a fresh approach and can enhance professional practice. In choosing to accept a student for placement we continue to develop and train up workers for the future which is an excellent way to improve the youth work profession and enhance practice across the sector.

Due to constraints around the areas of workers compensation and insurance student placement positions are filled through designated agencies only eg UWS School of Social Work, TAFE NSW.

Volunteers and students working with Children

Shire Wide does not accept students of high-school age for placements involving client contact. The reason for this is to protect the privacy of clients, who may in some cases be peers of these students.

Shire Wide Youth Services is an organisation that works with young people, and is a mandatory reporter. Volunteers who work with or have unsupervised contact with children and young people as a result of their duties at Shire Wide must sign a Working with Children Check declaration to say that they have not been convicted of any crime that may prohibit them from working with children. This declaration will be held on file.

Volunteers who work or have contact with children and young people, and / or who work with staff must also sign a confidentiality agreement. If volunteers refuse to complete this agreement, Shire Wide cannot offer them a voluntary position.
