Youth Participation

Shire Wide Youth Services is committed to providing a range of opportunities for young people to be involved in the decision-making processes that affect them. We do this in a number of ways:

  1. Menai Youth Advisory Committee
  2. SK8 Committee
  3. Summer Survival

Menai Youth Advisory Committee (MYAC) is open to young people between the ages of 12 – 18 who are linked to the Menai area. The aim of MYAC is to represent the views of this section of our community and to provide a forum to discuss and act on issues of importance to young people. Committee members also participate in planning activities and events for young people. The committee consists of up to 12 young people including representatives from local high schools.

What’s in it for young people?

Through training and skill development MYAC members will learn how to represent the broader needs of young people in the area and increase everyone’s access to a range of services and activities. Young people on the committee will have direct input into improving the community in which they live.

  • MYAC members will learn how to plan and run events including how to manage a budget of $10,000 per annum. Members will be provided with training and rewards for their participation.
  • In addition to event planning and management, MYAC members will gain skills in leadership, advocacy, mentoring, lobbying, public speaking and dealing with the media.
  • All young people who participate in the MYAC will have their contributions and training formally acknowledged by Shire Wide Youth Services.
  • For MYAC members interested in pursuing appointment on the Sutherland Shire’s Council’s Youth Committee and/or the NSW Government’s Youth Advisory Committee, this is a great opportunity to gain relevant skills and experience.

SK8 Committee

A long awaited decision has finally been made to locate the SK8 park at Don Lucas Reserve at Wanda.  Community consultation on the design will be happening in the near future.  Keep an eye on this page for more information.
